NITI Aayog is going to create its own
Poverty Index to measure poverty in the country. It aims to reduce poverty in
states in association with GMPI. In fact, due to Corona, there is a fear of
about 40 crore population in the country going below the poverty level.
Due to the worsening economic
conditions in the Corona period, the large population of the country is afraid
of going below the poverty level. Recently, the NITI Aayog held an
inter-ministerial meeting to improve the situation. UNDP was also present in
this along with officials of the concerned ministry. The meeting also discussed
poverty reduction and alternative reforms in the country. According to media
reports, the index has to be prepared by the end of the year and the poverty
situation in the states is improving. This will also improve India's rank in
UNDP MPI's Global Ranking. The Indian Poverty Index aims to improve health,
infant mortality, nutrition, education and standard of living. The
International Labor Organization (ILO) recently released data related to India.
In this, about 40 crore working people in India are estimated to fall below the
poverty level due to COVID-19.
According to the committee headed by
former RBI governor C Rangarajan, in 2014, a total of 36.3 crore people in
India was poor. Which was about 29.6 per cent of the entire population of the
country. Earlier in the year 2009, according to the Suresh Tendulkar Committee,
about 26.98 crores in the country, which was about 21.9 per cent of the total
population, were poor. Both these committees set the criteria of poverty in the
country. At present, there is no standard to measure poverty properly in the
country. Nor is it a true figure of the poor population.
